Start speaking and understanding Egyptian Arabic, the Arabic of Cairo's streets, cafés and homes, and of the films and series the whole Arab world watches. That is the main focus of this workbook. If you also want to read and understand written Arabic, every grammar point and vocabulary list includes the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) version as well, so you can add it whenever you're ready and see where the two match and where they differ.
It follows on from Learn Egyptian Arabic – it3allam masri. From chapter 7 onward there is no more transcription and all Arabic is written in Arabic script, so make sure you can read the alphabet before you get there. If you can't read Arabic yet, start with Master Arabic Reading & Writing for Beginners.
What you'll learn to do:
Greet people, introduce yourself and talk about your work
Order drinks and food, and ask "how much?" and "how many?"
Count, give your age, tell the time and name the months
Make an appointment and write a short letter or email
Say what you have and what you want, and talk about your hobbies
Point things out: this, that, here and there
Along the way you learn the possessives, the idafa, demonstratives in Egyptian Arabic and MSA, nominal sentences and negation, "there is / there are", and how "to want" differs across dialects.
Choose your own path:
Read and understand MSA, and speak Egyptian Arabic
Do everything in Egyptian Arabic
Do everything (reading, writing and speaking) in MSA
Every chapter has speaking, listening, reading and writing exercises. At the back you'll find an English-Arabic glossary. When you finish, you're at A1 level on the CEFR, the European scale schools and universities use.
The audio recordings and answer keys (PDF) are available as a download with the book, so it works well for self-study.
185 pages. Written in English.
